(All Ages) Turn the beat around—all the way to Latvia!—and join us to enjoy Latvian Folk instruments and dances of our sister city. No registration or tickets are required.
Family members of all ages are welcome to participate in this fun and interactive event, hosted by representatives from the Carmel-Jelgava Sister City Committee. Jelgava (pronounced YEL-ga-va) has been one of Carmel’s sister cities since 2022. It is in the Baltic country of Latvia, and music and dance are central to Latvian culture. Tereze Inveiss will demonstrate Latvia's national instrument—the kokle—as well as an assortment of wind and percussion instruments, and Andra Goetz will demonstrate some Latvian dances. Bring your moves and your dancing shoes!
Fun fact! The kokle is a string instrument that can be plucked or strummed, and it belongs to the Baltic Psaltery family, along with the kannel from Estonia and the kankles from Lithuania. Kokles are medieval instruments. The oldest one found dates back to the 12th century! Written data about the kokle and the playing of it dates back to the 16th century, and the first known kokle tune was written in the 19th century. Such an expansive history! Don't miss the opportunity to listen to this amazing Folk instrument.
