Author and filmmaker Curtis Chin shares his new memoir, EVERYTHING I LEARNED, I LEARNED IN A CHINESE RESTAURANT. Registration is required for this free event.
Join us as we welcome author and filmmaker Curtis Chin. Chin will discuss his publishing journey, as well as read from his new memoir, Everything I Learned, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant. The book, which Publishers Weekly named one of the Top 10 memoirs of fall 2023, focuses on the author's experiences growing up in 1980s Detroit and how his family’s iconic Chinese restaurant, Chung’s, served as a safe haven amid the crime, drugs, and AIDS of the era. The memoir's opening line includes the phrase “for here or to go,” a common phrase used in most take-aways that also serves as a central theme in the comedic memoir.
Curtis Chin, LSA Creative Writing and Literature, has received awards from ABC/Disney Television, New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and many more. He has written for TV and film and has screened his social justice documentaries at over 600 locations in nearly 20 countries. In addition, his essay in Bon Appetit was selected for Best American Food Writing 2023.
Book sales and signing will follow the author's presentation. Registration is required for this free author event.
