Italian Carnevale is a vibrant, month-long celebration that ends on Fat Tuesday - Martedì grasso. The festivities are a rich tapestry of history, culture, and joyous celebrations whose roots date back to ancient Roman rituals. With this presentation, we will “travel through time” to discover the roots and symbolism of Carnevale while learning about its colorful modern traditions and attractions. We will explore the different characteristics of famous Italian Carnevale traditions: masks, parades, special foods, local customs, and much more.
Presenter Elisa Lucchi-Riester is a native of Rome, Italy. She is professor at Butler University in the Modern Language, Literatures and Cultures Department, teaching Italian and Spanish.
This event is presented in partnership with the Carmel Sister Cities. Registration is required.
