Decodable books provide new and struggling readers with practice reading words made up of sounds they’ve been taught, such as consonant letter sounds and specific vowel sounds like short A or long O.
Look for decodable books in the Main Library’s Kids Area in the Readers section. Books in this section are aimed at kids who are just learning to read, primarily in grades K through 2. There are also a few series of decodable books in our Chapter Books section, such as the Meg and Greg series by Elspeth Rae. See a list of decodable book series and titles here.
Additional decodable books can be found inside many of our Phonics Kits. Located in the children’s audiovisual section in the Main Library’s Kids Area, these Phonics Kit contains a series of books that build on one another. Some are just right for kids beginning to read, while others provide engaging, age-appropriate stories for older readers who need additional practice with basic reading skills. Each kit lists a suggested age level on its label so you can locate the ones most appropriate for your child. See a list of Phonics Kits here.
Library staff are happy to offer more guidance on finding and using decodable books and Phonics Kits, so stop by the desk when you visit.
